On the evening of August 17th, UEFA officially announced the three candidates for last season’s Player of the Year, Messi, Harland, and Debrane. Among them, De Braun é and Harland won the treble (Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup) with Manchester City last season, both of whom are the absolute core of the team.
The UEFA Best Selection examines the performance of players who have played for European clubs and national teams during the selection cycle. Although Messi has bid farewell to the European league, he was qualified for the World Cup last season by leading Argentina to win the championship, playing for Paris Saint Germain. At the age of 36, Messi had previously won the UEFA Player of the Year award twice in the 2011-11 and 2014-15 seasons, second only to Cristiano Ronaldo’s three. The award was established from the 2010-11 season, with Messi being the first winner. And Deblaune and Harand have never received this honor before.
In addition, UEFA has officially announced the candidate for the best coach of last season. Last season’s Champions League champion and runner up coach, Manchester City’s Guardiola, and Inter Milan’s Inzaghi, respectively, were nominated. The other finalist was Spalletti, who helped Napoli win the Serie A championship last season. The UEFA official stated that the final winners of this tournament will be announced at the UEFA Champions League draw on August 31st.
